| | President's Testimony The UMB BioPark About eight years ago, with support from the City of Baltimore and the business community, UMB began developing a research park on 4.7 acres across Martin Luther King Boulevard from the main campus. That early venture has expanded to 10 acres which, when fully built out, will boast some 1.8 million square feet in 12 buildings plus parking garages and landscaped parks at final build-out. Currently the BioPark is approximately 20% complete with 360,000 square feet of space in two buildings. In 2010 the Maryland Forensic Medical Center and a third privately financed building will open, adding another 300,000 square feet. 350 people are currently employed in the BioPark, with 100 new jobs anticipated in 2009 and another 100 jobs in 2010. On January 28, 2009, the Board of Public Works approved a lease for the Baltimore City Community College Life Sciences Institute in the BioPark. This Institute anticipates providing some 200 Baltimore City students with the skills they need for jobs in the regions biotech companies, academic health centers, and federal laboratories.
